Seven Charter Schools Hit with Asbestos Fines

PHOENIX, AZ/August 6/The Business Journal of Phoenix--Seven charter schools in Tuscon Arizona were fined a total of $67,000 for asbestos violations discovered in May 2006, including failure to conduct asbestos inspections and create asbestos management plans. According to the EPA, the schools have since taken steps to address these compliance issues.

A Call to Increase Bereavement Awards for UK Asbestos Families

SUNDERLAND, UK./August 4/Sunderland Echo--A UK law firm called on the Government to increase the fixed bereavement award of £10,000 (approximately $20,202.52 USD) for families of mesothelioma victims in England and Wales in an effort to bring those payments in line with similar awards made in Scotland, where bereavement compensation payments are three times higher.

West Australian Meso Victims Lose $760,000 On Appeal

WEST AUSTRALIA. August 3 /WA News/ -- A West Australian Court of Appeals yesterday overturned an award of over $760,000 for two mesothelioma victims, one of whom died in June. An attorney representing both men stated they will review the judgment and the families will consider their options, which may include an appeal to the High Court.

Virginia Man Goes to Jail for Using Homeless for Improper Asbestos Removal

(Washington, D.C. - Aug. 1, 2007) According to the U.S. Attorney's Office and the Environmental Protection Agency, a two-time convicted felon has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for improperly removing asbestos from a government building in Roanoke, and using homeless men to conduct the work.
