Hawaii Researchers are Urged to Apply for Grants
At a recent conference, Donella Wilson of the American Cancer Society encouraged Hawaiians to apply for more medical and research grants. As director of research promotion and communication, Wilson emphasized the importance of grants in the fight against cancer; to date, the ACS has awarded $3.1 billion in cancer research and sponsored 42 Nobel Prize winners. While the Cancer Society has funded $4.2 million in Hawaiian research previously, there are currently no Hawaiian recipients, which Wilson hopes to see change.
Dr. Michele Carbone, leading mesothelioma researcher, was one of the Hawaiian conference's featured speakers. When he began his research, Carbone received $1 million from the ACS, which he considers a significant asset to his successful career today. Currently, Carbone and his team are allotted more than half of all federal mesothelioma research funding.
