Asbestos removal started at city's first 'green' building
Johnstown, Pennsylvania is getting its first 'green' building; over half of the materials used in its construction are recycled, making it Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-certified. The building is the former Team Chevrolet showroom, and is slated to be completely renovated by November 1.
Asbestos removal is well underway as the first step in the building's reconstruction. “We really wanted to practice what we preach – sustainable design,” building engineer Matthew Sotosky said. “What better way to do that than by taking an old industrial site and reinventing for a totally new use.” The building's main goal is to raise environmental awareness and stimulate the revision of nearby structures. Sotosky hopes the asbestos removal and reconstruction will encourage productivity and environmentally sound business practices.
