Christine Thistle, resident of Eliot, Maine, raised concerns at a recent Selectmen's meeting that trucks may be illegally dumping dangerous asbestos waste at the Great Hill Sand and Gravel Company.  Her suspicions were raised when she read an article in a Massachusetts newspaper about the nature of construction waste and the high probability that it is laced with loose asbestos.

Although the Board of Selectmen believes the situation has been closely monitored, they are filing their concerns with Maine's Department of Environmental Protection for verification.  Selectman Gary Sinden said, "The concern is that the soil would contain asbestos that is friable. ...; All that means is that it's loose and could become airborne."

Residents of Eliot are awaiting the results of a DEP analysis.
