Asbestos in Calcium Silicate

Concerned that exposure to the contained in old calcium silicate could lead to diseases such as mesothelioma? Learn more below.

What is Calcium Silicate?

Calcium silicate is a compound of amorphous silica, lime, reinforcing fibers and other additives used to insulate high temperature pipes and other pieces of equipment, and to prevent fire in many other applications.  It’s considered one of the most successful fireproofing materials available today, and is one of the most widely used passive fireproofing methods in Europe. Although it is successful in its basic state, Calcium silicate was often reinforced with asbestos from the 1950s until 1972.

But by the time the asbestos was removed from the product, countless shipyard and industrial insulation workers had been exposed to asbestos from calcium silicate insulation. Asbestos calcium silicate can still be found covering pipes and other high temperature mechanisms made before 1972, exposing a new generation of workers to the deadly effects of asbestos.

How asbestos exposure can lead to malignant mesothelioma

When a product contains asbestos, any damage or wear releases the asbestos fibers into the air where they behave like microscopic knives when inhaled. Once inside the lungs or stomach, asbestos fibers become embedded in the tissue, causing severe damage to the organ lining. Eventually the tissue becomes irritated and scarred, leading to shortness of breath in the victim. In rare cases, asbestos exposure can result in mesothelioma many years or decades after the initial contact with asbestos.
