Asbestos in Corrugated Asbestos Paper

Concerned that exposure to the asbestos contained in corrugated paper could lead to asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma? Learn more below.

What is asbestos corrugated paper?

Asbestos corrugated paper was used mainly for pipe insulation until the 1970s, when asbestos was phased out of most construction products. Often referred to as “air cell” insulation, asbestos corrugated paper could be wrapped around pipes, boilers furnaces, duct work and other industrial equipment. The ridges created tiny pockets of trapped air that would aid the in the insulation properties of the material, as well as making it lightweight and easy to install. Asbestos corrugated paper is sometimes mistaken for ordinary corrugated cardboard, but is grey in color and contains between 30 – 50 percent chrysotile asbestos.

While it was an extremely effective insulator, asbestos corrugated paper was also extremely dangerous. Any manipulation of the paper, including cutting, sawing or removing the paper would release microscopic asbestos fibers into the air, where they can remain suspended for hours or days.

Inhaled fibers can become embedded in the mesothelium, the delicate wall of cells that line many of the body’s internal organs. Asbestos exposure has been linked definitively to several types of cancer and other asbestos related diseases. Mesothelioma, or more correctly, malignant mesothelioma, is a rare but deadly form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure that affects the lungs, heart, or stomach. Asbestos also causes asbestosis, a serious and progressive disease caused by asbestos fibers scarring the lungs and eventually cutting off oxygen supply to the victim. Asbestosis and mesothelioma cancer can lie dormant for many years and decades after the asbestos exposure, suddenly “flowering” without any warning.

Tragically, asbestos manufacturers knew for decades that their products were hazardous, but stifled any information that may have helped their workers stay safe, including advocating the use of safety equipment. Mesothelioma law has been put in place to help mesothelioma cancer victims win the compensation they deserve.
