Asbestos in Corrugated Paper Pipe Wrap
Concerned that corrugated paper with asbestos could cause asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma? Learn more below.
What is corrugated paper pipe wrap?
Corrugated paper was used for a wide variety of purposes in residential and commercial buildings, but its most common use by far was in the thermal insulation of pipe coverings, hot water lines and fireproofing around stoves and fireplaces. It was also used in walls as an added layer of insulation.
Intact corrugated paper is relatively harmless, but it is paper after all, and can easily become torn or otherwise damaged, releasing deadly airborne asbestos fibers.

How asbestos causes mesothelioma cancer
If inhaled or swallowed, microscopic asbestos fibers can become lodged in lungs and stomachs, first irritating then scarring the lining. In rare cases, this irritation leads to malignant mesothelioma, a rare but deadly form of cancer. Health issues related to asbestos exposure can appear many years after the exposure occurred, so many victims do not even realize that they have been exposed to asbestos until it’s too late.
Pleural Mesothelioma Symptoms
The most common form of mesothelioma is pleural, accounting for about 75 percent of all cases. When a patient has pleural mesothelioma, symptoms include:
- Shortness of breath (dyspnea)
- Mild to severe pain in the chest, abdomen, shoulder, arm or lower back
