What is asbestos Flexboard?

Asbestos Flexboard was manufactured by Johns-Manville in the mid 20th century to insulate and fireproof and soundproof ceilings and walls. It can still be found in many residential, commercial and municipal buildings today. Asbestos Flexboard is, as the name implies, was very flexible yet strong. It was made from hydraulically pressed asbestos and cement and came in 4’ x 8’ sheets that could be easily installed with nails close to the edges without breakage. Despite its usefulness, durability and excellent insulation properties, asbestos Flexboard is a potentially hazardous product.

Asbestos has been considered a near-miraculous mineral for thousands of years, but only reached its heyday in the 1950s when industry discovered the magnitude of useful products that could be created from it. Asbestos is quite literally a rock - it will not burn, conduct heat, corrode or rust. But it also has all of the versatility of a fiber, and can be woven into textiles or included in other materials to boost their fireproofing or thermal properties.

Unfortunately, asbestos also happens to be extremely hazardous. Airborne asbestos fibers released during the manufacturing, application, or removal of asbestos Flexboard can remain suspended in the air for hours or days, and can be inhaled easily. Once in the body, asbestos fibers can become embedded in the mesothelium, the delicate protective layer of cells that line the body’s internal organs, leading to scarring and more serious problems many years or decades after exposure. Inhaled asbestos fibers are the precursor to numerous serious illnesses, including asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma, a rare but deadly form of cancer.

Although Johns-Manville knew for many years that their asbestos products were dangerous, they suppressed information that would have protected their workers from exposure. As a result, asbestos related diseases such as mesothelioma and asbestosis have killed or incapacitated countless thousands of individuals exposed to asbestos.
