Asbestos in Fume Hoods
Concerned that fume hoods made from asbestos could cause asbestos related diseases such as mesothelioma? Learn more below.
What are fume hoods?
Fume hoods are a part of the air exchanging systems of many buildings, including homes, schools, and offices. Fume hoods are also used in laboratories, factories, and other facilities where potentially dangerous fumes need to be filtered and then released via ducting or filtered recirculation.
So why are they so dangerous? In the bad old days when asbestos was stuffed into everything from construction materials to children’s clothing, fume hoods were also made from asbestos. This meant that recirculated air laced with asbestos fibers could be spread far and wide if ever there was even the slightest wear or damage to a fume hood. While asbestos fume hoods are no longer sold, many are still use in buildings across the country.
If you suspect that you have an asbestos fume hood, have the air in your home or office tested to make sure that you are not being exposed to asbestos.

How asbestos causes mesothelioma
If inhaled or swallowed, microscopic asbestos fibers can become lodged in lungs and stomachs, first irritating and then scarring the lining. In some cases, this scarring leads to mesothelioma, a rare but usually deadly form of cancer.
Health issues related to asbestos exposure can appear many years after the exposure occurred. Often mesothelioma and other asbestos related diseases take decades to appear.
Pleural Mesothelioma Symptoms
The most common form of mesothelioma is pleural, accounting for about 75% of all cases. When a patient has pleural mesothelioma, symptoms include:
- Shortness of breath (dyspnea)
- Mild to severe pain in the chest, abdomen, shoulder, arm or lower back
