What is soft concrete?
From the late nineteenth century until about 1980, asbestos was considered a “miracle mineral” with endless versatility and applications. It is a truly remarkable material that is impervious to flame and heat and has a tensile strength higher than similarly sized steel. Asbestos was used in countless products, both on its own and mixed with other materials to increase their strength and insulation.
In 2008 the Environmental Protection Agency discovered through a roof repair project on a government building that the concrete material used for forming the roof surface in 1934 contained a high level of asbestos. Dubbed “soft concrete,” the mixture was made lighter and easier to spread with the addition of the asbestos.
Anyone involved in the mixing, applying or removal of asbestos soft concrete is at high risk for asbestos exposure. Individuals who work in buildings where asbestos is present are also at risk if the material is damaged or repaired, thus sending deadly friable asbestos into the air. Many people who have been exposed to asbestos-containing materials such as soft concrete have been diagnosed with asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma, a rare but deadly cancer that is caused by asbestos exposure.
Companies that made asbestos products were well aware that their workers were being harmed by the asbestos, but stifled any information that may have helped their workers stay safe, including advocating the use of safety equipment. Mesothelioma law has been put in place to help mesothelioma cancer victims win the compensation they deserve.
