Abex Corporation
The Abex Corporation manufactured friction railway parts such as journal bearings and break hoes in Portsmouth, Virginia from 1927 until 1978.
Like many companies that produced friction materials for railroads or automobiles prior to about 1980, Abex Corporation used asbestos in their products. Asbestos was considered a crucial material for any type of high heat application due to its strength and ability to withstand fire and heat. Abex discontinued using asbestos in their products following the 1977 U.S. Government warnings on asbestos health hazards.
In 1986 the former site of the Abex Corporation was declared an EPA Superfund site due to high levels of lead, copper, zinc and asbestos that contaminated the site.
Anyone who worked with Abex components is at risk of developing an asbestos-related disease such as
mesothelioma cancer. Mesothelioma can take over 40 years to appear after exposure to asbestos, so many workers who worked at Abex Corporation prior to 1978 could only now be seeing the first symptoms of the disease.
If you believe you or a family member has developed mesothelioma or any other asbestos-related disease as a result of working at Abex Corporation, and would like to learn about available treatment options or about working with a
