Westinghouse Electric Company

Founded in 1886, Westinghouse Electric Company became one of the early drivers of the electrification of America. It worked with Nikola Tesla to pioneer alternating current (AC) and fought head to head with the other great American electric company Edison in the War of the Currents. Westinghouse’s dramatic illumination of the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago was one of the first electrical light displays and cemented the company as one of the leaders of American industry.

In the 1930s,Westinghouse revolutionized nuclear physics when it created the first industrial Atom Smasher, the ancestor of today’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC). By the Second World War, Westinghouse had established itself as major military producer, manufacturing aviation equipment such as airborne radar, jet engine propulsion and ground based lighting. From the 1950s through the 1980s the company, now known as Westinghouse Electric Corporation bought and sold many interests, many of which made asbestos products. Like many other manufacturers of the era that made high heat products, Westinghouse used asbestos in insulation materials. Westinghouse also used asbestos in numerous products, including gaskets, cables, packing material, turbines, and more. Westinghouse was bought by Viacom, Inc. in 1999, which renamed itself CBS Corporation in 2005.
