Asbestos Abatement ProjectA school for infants in Hobart, Australia has been closed temporarily due to asbestos concerns during a removal process of the fibers, reports the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

While air monitoring tests have come back negative over the weekend, the Education Department isn't taking any chances and will do conduct more tests in the near future, according to the news source.

Andrew Finch, a worker at the department, defended the decision to remove asbestos over the weekend. Comments regarding the removal process and the type of treatment the school is receiving encouraged Finch to follow-up on some of the questions about the contractor.

"As a precaution I think we've just want[ed] to make completely certain that the building is suitable for occupation," Finch said.

Students have been relocated to a nearby primary school but the news source did not say when they would be allowed to return.

Inhaled asbestos is known to cause lung cancer and mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. People who worry they may have contracted an asbestos-related illness such as mesothelioma often try to seek compensation through an asbestos law firm.
