Veteran Service Organizations
Veteran Service Organizations
When you’re a veteran with a disability like mesothelioma, it’s essential to surround yourself with support. Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs) are non-profit and private organizations that exist solely to meet the needs of those who so honorably served our nation. VSOs help America’s veterans to feel connected and stay informed, long after their military service has ended. They also fight tirelessly for veterans’ rights; in fact, many of the benefits enjoyed by veterans today are a direct result of VSO initiatives.
How a VSO Can Help You With Your VA Claim
A Veteran Service Organization can be a vital source of information and support as you cope with your illness, helping you connect with other disabled veterans and stay abreast of the latest asbestos legislation. It can also help you navigate the complex road of filing for VA benefits by answering your questions, guiding you through the application process, and assisting you with obtaining the required documentation.
In many cases, a VSO may even be willing to advocate on your behalf for the compensation and/or services you are seeking. These organizations have personnel who are specially trained to assist veterans in filing for benefits. Most will not charge you for their assistance and do not typically require you to be a member of that VSO. However, if your claim incurs extra expenses (such as for photocopying documents), you may be required to reimburse the organization.

How Do I Find a Veteran Service Organization in My Area?
Listed below are Veteran Service Organizations from around the U.S. These VSOs are recognized or “chartered” by the Veterans Administration. This means that they can legally represent you in your efforts to collect VA benefits.

If you make the decision to have a recognized VSO represent you in your VA claim, that organization should provide you with a special form called the VA Form 21-22, “Appointment of Veterans Service Organization as Claimant’s Representative.” The completed form will then be submitted to the Veterans Administration.
